With the completion of six decades of unwavering dedication to Medicina Alternativa, we stand at the threshold of a new decade—one whose windows of opportunity are flung wide open, inviting an era of abundance, prosperity, and vibrant health grounded in holistic principles. As we reflect on our journey since 1962, we honor the foundational vision of integrating complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) into global healthcare, a pursuit validated by the World Health Organization’s recognition of traditional and complementary systems as essential to achieving universal health coverage (WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy, 2014–2023; extended 2025).
I firmly believe that, amidst the inevitable challenges of this decade—be they geopolitical shifts, climate-driven health crises, or the persistent burden of non-communicable diseases—this period holds unparalleled promise for exponential growth. It is a clarion call to propel Medicina Alternativa and our Ecumenical Medical Humanitarian Knights of Charity to unprecedented heights, harnessing evidence-based integrative therapies to serve the greater good of humanity. The burgeoning global CAM market, projected to exceed $400 billion by 2028 (Grand View Research, 2023), underscores the timeliness of our mission: to lead with scientific rigor, cultural sensitivity, and compassionate action.
The Knights of the Ecumenical Medical Humanitarian Order of St. John of Jerusalem traces an illustrious lineage, authenticated by official Charters that link us directly to the original Sovereign Military Order of St. John, founded under Blessed Gerard in 1048 amid the Crusader hospitals of Jerusalem. From the Knights Hospitaller’s medieval sanctuaries—where care transcended creed—to our modern charter of 1993, our Order has evolved while remaining steadfast in its tripartite ethos: Pro Fide, Pro Utilitate Hominum, Pro Humanitate (For Faith, For Service to Humanity, For Humankind). In an era where the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery (2015) estimates a deficit of 143 million essential procedures annually in low- and middle-income nations, our humanitarian mandate is more urgent than ever. We are called to elevate human dignity, alleviate suffering, and empower communities to live life in its fullest plenitude. I earnestly invite every Knight, Dame, and affiliate to renew active fraternity, embodying the Nobel ideals of peace, health equity, and charitable service that define us. The Medicina Alternativa Trustees, in fidelity to the 1993 Charter, steward this sacred trust with transparency and accountability.
The age of mediocrity and acquiescence to average outcomes is irrevocably behind us. To ascend as the preeminent global authority in complementary medicines—encompassing acupuncture, naturopathy, Ayurveda, homeopathy, and emerging integrative modalities—we must embody dynamism, proactivity, consistency, and boundless creativity. This demands rigorous research collaborations (e.g., NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health protocols), peer-reviewed publications, and strategic partnerships with UNESCO-affiliated bodies and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being).
I am profoundly confident that, united in purpose, we shall rally around Medicina Alternativa and the Knights of Charity with renewed enthusiasm, unyielding vigour, and proactive participation. Together, we shall illuminate the path of integrative healing, lead with moral and intellectual authority, and triumph over every challenge as never before—forging a legacy that resonates across continents and centuries.
In Service to Humanity,
H.E Prof. Dr Sir Lakshman Madurasinghe KGC EMH KStJ
